Oregon Steel Mills- Rivergate
This site has a high potential for recontamination because of riverbank erosion. Contaminants locked in sediments can be released into the river when a riverbank erodes. The site has no armoring or rip rap, and when the rivers rises either through waves or high water levels, erosion occurs and contaminants are released into the river sediment.
Currently, ODEQ and Oregon Steel Mills are in the Design and Permitting phase of a plan to eliminate riverbank erosion. ODEQ hopes to begin implementation of the project by the 2nd Quarter of 2012, but this date is not set in stone. Also, ODEQ is monitoring performance of stormwater discharge and permit compliance at the site.
