City’s Portland Harbor Superfund Community Grants Now Open! The City of Portland is now accepting applications for the 2023 Portland Harbor Superfund Community Grants funding cycle and the Portland Harbor Superfund Community Grants Review Committee! A total of $500,000 is available for activities, projects, and programs that amplify the voices and support the involvement of Portlanders disproportionately affected by the Portland Harbor Superfund contamination and cleanup. These include Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC); people with current, traditional, or cultural connections to this stretch of the river; people who eat shellfish and non-migratory fish like carp, catfish, and bass caught in Portland Harbor; and housed and unhoused residents who live in neighborhoods near the Superfund site. Grant applications are due 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 16, 2022.
Groups that are led by or work with communities with current, traditional, or cultural connections to the area are particularly encouraged to apply. Applicants may request up to $75,000 to achieve the following objectives:
- Expand and deepen community leadership and participation in the cleanup process
- Support under-represented community members’ participation in the cleanup design process
- Build capacity to shape and support EPA’s plan to minimize cleanup construction impacts on housed and unhoused neighbors
- Engage and educate communities about the Lower Willamette River Fish Advisory and scientific, technical, policy, and process topics related to the cleanup
- Support career development in environmental remediation
Apply to be a Portland Harbor Community Grants Reviewer and help select the 2023 grantees! Reviewers will read and score grant applications, participate in conversations with selected applicants, communicate with Portland Harbor team members and the other review panelists, and engage in a consensus-based process to select grantees. All meetings will take place over Zoom. Portlanders who represent communities disproportionately affected by the contamination and cleanup are strongly encouraged to apply. Community reviewers will receive an honorarium of $500. Review committee applications are due 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 9, 2022.
